Incorporate an outline. In this room velvet edges the patterned upholstery of the headboard creating a frame for the delicate design within. The texture along with the black-lacquered bedside tables and a gold-and-cream wall covering ups the opulence of the bedroom. Contrast piping is an alternative if you like the idea of a headboard border for a more formal look.

Iron headboard. The beauty strength and value of the iron headboard and base are cherished by all those who own one. In the later part of the 19th century artisans hand poured and polished iron bed frames. When World War I started they stopped as the iron was needed to make weapons. The end of this war saw handmade items replaced with assembly line products. New iron headboards now come in many different powder-coated colors and finishes. If custom is important to you then this is the way to go. Make sure your headboard is made from cold-rolled steel as it has a higher tensile strength and will not dent like hot-rolled steel. Antique iron headboards are not cheap but they do come with a real sense of history. A new iron headboard is comparable in price to a standard timber headboard and base that don′t have a lot of carving detail.

Headboards can be a simple decorative detail or a handy surface to lean on for late-night reading — but they can also be so much more. So if you’re in the market for an upgrade tap into the possibilities for this piece of furniture and consider choosing — or designing — a headboard for your bed that will provide anything from extra storage to a mini gallery or even expand the sense of space in your bedroom. Create pattern with padding. Headboard pattern doesn’t have to come from the print or weave of upholstery. Here horizontally stitched padding maximizes comfort and introduces a motif. If you want to make a bedroom feel sumptuous be inspired by the tactile fabric and width of this design which gives the room five-star-hotel style.

shiplap with a twist. The designers of this wood-paneled bedroom could have stopped at a single layer of paneling and the room would have been a cozy dream space but instead they wrapped some of the planks with faux grass to add a dose of color and another layer of texture to the room.

Reflect the window. Here’s another canny use of mirror in a headboard. In this room the effect is window-like as the multipaned headboard echoes the design of the French doors. It adds light and space for sure but also creates an interesting focal point in an otherwise neutral simply decorated space. This is a great way to build in a striking design detail without adding color or visual clutter.

Bring flowers. In a mostly white and pattern-free room a floral headboard stands out. The effect here is one of natural abundance with the riot of blooms and foliage bringing life to the cool calm room but the blue-only tones keep things transitional rather than cottage-y. Note how the geometric patterns of the pillows dressing the bed tilt the balance to the contemporary too.

World map. I love the idea of using a large mural as the backdrop to a bed especially in a smaller space where it can distract from the diminutive size of the room. Here a vintage world map imparts grandeur to this masculine bedroom and adds some faded neutral color to balance the cool steely grays.

Opt for a private view. If your guest room opens to a very public part of the house common for downstairs bedrooms off living rooms or kitchens this is a nice idea. The headboard provides storage and a cuppa perch but it also creates a visual barrier between the bed and the door — making the space as you enter the room almost an in-room corridor. It’s handy for privacy if say one guest is still in bed and the other is up and opening the bedroom door into the room where everyone’s having breakfast.

Keep it crisp. A neat geometric pattern for the headboard echoes the symmetrical chests of drawers bedside lamps and mirrors in this quietly luxurious bedroom. For a design that’s equally tailored opt to finish a patterned headboard with studs like these.
