Play and display. This headboard unit works all sorts of wonders providing enough space for a lot of clothes storage around its edges. I also like the way it creates a tidy recess for matching built-in bedside tables — sizable ones to boot. The really good-looking part though is the shelves inside the recess which provide heaps of room for a movable art display or collection of treasured photographs. And making the wood dark and moody lets the lamplight create a supercozy soporific glow.

Keep illuminating company. Who needs bedside lights? Do away with extraneous objects entirely by choosing a supermodern headboard with built-in illumination — the ultimate luxury for a minimalist sleeping space.

Combine patterns. In this room the curvaceous headboard’s floral-and-foliage motif provides a contrast to the sharp lines of a striped wall behind the bed. Curves are easy on the eye and the softer pattern plays up the comfort of the bed. Get the look by choosing a headboard shape that features curves rather than a regular rectangular. Also there’s an art to mixing two very different patterns: To avoid a jarring vision choose prints that share at least one color and whose shapes vary in scale or intricacy.

Lighten up. There’s plenty of space for a bedside lamp in this room but thanks to this bed design there’s no need. If you have an old-fashioned wrought iron bed like this or indeed any style with bars it’s easy to weave fairy or garland lights around the headboard. It’s a playful touch for a teenager’s room or a creative decorative detail in an eclectic adult space. Just make sure to plug your lights into a socket with an on-off switch rather than an extension lead meaning they would need to be unplugged to be turned off. Or you can buy rope lights with in-line switches.

Create pattern with padding. Headboard pattern doesn’t have to come from the print or weave of upholstery. Here horizontally stitched padding maximizes comfort and introduces a motif. If you want to make a bedroom feel sumptuous be inspired by the tactile fabric and width of this design which gives the room five-star-hotel style.

Fireplace surround. Another item to repurpose as a headboard and one that’s even more unexpected than vintage shutters is a fireplace mantle. If you’re lucky you’ll score an oversized unit from some old Victorian mansion into whose recesses a bed fits just perfectly. If you really love the idea but can’t find an antique model to accommodate a king-size bed you could always have one made by a carpenter to fit your mattress’ exact dimensions. This romantic Los Angeles bedroom shows off the best of both worlds with a traditional tufted headboard fitted inside the surround.

Canopy with headboard. In the 13th century the canopy or tester was born out of necessity and then popular for its grandeur. The canopy was suspended from the ceiling beams using ropes and fabric was then draped over to act as insulation against the bitter winter cold. When gentry traveled between their city and country homes they frequently took beds with them. Portable beds were known as trussing beds. Staff was assigned to dismantle transport and then assemble them again. The canopy headboard shown is a modern take on a medieval design. The scallop edging on the canopy harmonizes with the timber fretwork on the headboard. The amount of fabric and the detail in the canopy design make this a more expensive style. If you find an inexpensive fabric that you like both sides of you won′t need to line it which can keep costs down.

Combination headboard. Regardless of the style or shape a headboard will help anchor your room′s design. If you need inspiration for the rest of the room′s furnishings start with the headboard. By taking ideas from the past mixing different materials and modern methods you can achieve stunning results. This wood-framed headboard and base with shagreen panels and bone trim takes a few ancient design ideas (some previously mentioned) and creates a smart contemporary look for this bedroom.

Take the rail way. This isn’t so much a headboard as a built-in storage unit with a bed tucked inside. It shows that shelving isn’t the only open storage that can be built into a headboard. Here there’s also space for a hanging rail. It’s not full wardrobe scale but it’s good enough for last night’s clothes a pair of bathrobes or an overnight guest’s garments. Above there’s space for extra blankets towels or bulky luggage while directly over the bed there’s room for a lamp. Using the same color throughout the room has prevented this multicompartment headboard from looking too crowded.
