Wood slab. While many headboards are primarily decorative they become functional when you add reading lights. Wood provides a more solid surface for mounting than fabric or metal; this live-edge slab imparts a nice balance of modern and rustic to this Colorado bedroom.

shutters. Once an item that you might find discarded on a roadside or buried in piles at the architectural salvage depot shutters are now a hot commodity at flea markets. If you’re going for the bohemian look find a pair that really shows its age with exposed layers of paint such as this example in a Los Angeles bedroom.

Iron headboard. The beauty strength and value of the iron headboard and base are cherished by all those who own one. In the later part of the 19th century artisans hand poured and polished iron bed frames. When World War I started they stopped as the iron was needed to make weapons. The end of this war saw handmade items replaced with assembly line products. New iron headboards now come in many different powder-coated colors and finishes. If custom is important to you then this is the way to go. Make sure your headboard is made from cold-rolled steel as it has a higher tensile strength and will not dent like hot-rolled steel. Antique iron headboards are not cheap but they do come with a real sense of history. A new iron headboard is comparable in price to a standard timber headboard and base that don′t have a lot of carving detail.

Opt for a private view. If your guest room opens to a very public part of the house common for downstairs bedrooms off living rooms or kitchens this is a nice idea. The headboard provides storage and a cuppa perch but it also creates a visual barrier between the bed and the door — making the space as you enter the room almost an in-room corridor. It’s handy for privacy if say one guest is still in bed and the other is up and opening the bedroom door into the room where everyone’s having breakfast.

Stay sharp. This room turns the pairing of floral headboard and geometric pillows on its head with painterly blooms on the pillows and a tailored design on the headboard. In a warm color the headboard ensures that the room is a cozy haven without compromising the smartness of the design. Want to make a high-ceilinged room feel warmer? Follow this room’s lead with a cocooning dark neutral for the walls. With crisp white for the ceiling and molding the period features are still noticeable.

Add a mirrored border. This lavish custom headboard has a bit of a 1930s Hollywood boudoir look to it; don’t you think? You can almost picture Jean Harlow or Carole Lombard padding about the room in a silky robe and high-heeled slippers. But back to the headboard: This design is more than just Tinseltown glamorous. The built-in mirror bounces light from the windows around the room and plays with spatial perception as it appears to offer a glimpse of another room behind it fooling the eye into seeing a far larger space than is there. This idea could work wonders in a compact or dark room as well as one needing a little stardust.
